One Future Post Volume 9: Towards collective liberation
In this volume of One Future Post, curated by us, we ruminate on the necessity and impact of continuing social justice work amidst genocides and violence.
Curator Speaks
Recently, a quote from Ebyan Zanini, a writer and poetess, has reinvigorated sustained action against violence and genocides.
“If you give in to despair, who benefits? The oppressor or the oppressed?”
This singular quote represents the dichotomy of working on social justice. While the necessity of social justice cannot be overstated, its impact on those doing the work can be detrimental. There is evidence to suggest the effects of compassion fatigue, burnout and secondary traumatic stress on social justice workers. We are also deeply aware that it is a privilege to be able to continue our regular programming and operations at this time. As we constantly ask ourselves, what is the way forward and where are we even headed, we are reminded of our blog documenting our conversation with Amitabh Behar, Interim Executive Director of Oxfam India, on where what it takes to build social justice solutions.
